A river cruise or a sunset from its banks in Guwahati, the state’s largest city, is a fine way to feel its scale. Guwahati itself holds the revered Kamakhya Temple on a wooded hilltop above the water.

Kaziranga and Wildlife

Assam’s crowning glory is Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to two-thirds of the world’s one-horned rhinoceros. Its grasslands and wetlands also shelter wild elephants, water buffalo, swamp deer and tigers. A jeep safari here, through mist-hung grass at dawn, is unforgettable. Manas, on the Bhutan border, adds more forest and rarer species still.

Tea Country

Assam is one of the world’s great tea regions, and its estates roll green across the plains near Jorhat and Dibrugarh. Many colonial-era bungalows now welcome guests, offering a glimpse of planter life, garden walks and, of course, the strong malty brew that carries the state’s name around the world.

Culture and Festivals

Assam’s culture centres on the Bihu festivals that mark the farming year with dance, song and feasting. The river island of Majuli, one of the largest in the world, is a centre of Vaishnavite monasteries and mask-making, and a peaceful place to slow down.

Food

Assamese food is light, fresh and subtly spiced, built on rice, fish and seasonal greens. Dishes such as masor tenga, a tangy fish curry, and simple herb-laced preparations reflect a cuisine close to the land and river.

When To Visit

November to April brings dry, pleasant weather and the best wildlife viewing, as parks are open and grass is low. The monsoon swells the Brahmaputra and closes some reserves, but leaves the countryside brilliantly green.
