Rajasthan’s Rajput rulers built to impress, and their forts remain some of the finest in the world. Amber Fort near Jaipur, reached by a winding ramp above Maota Lake, is a masterpiece of mirrored halls and painted gates. Chittorgarh and Kumbhalgarh, both UNESCO-listed, tell stories of siege and valour, the latter ringed by a wall second in length only to the Great Wall of China. Many former palaces are now heritage hotels, so you can sleep where maharajas once did.

Into the Thar Desert

No visit is complete without a night in the desert. From Jaisalmer or Bikaner you can ride a camel over rippled dunes, watch the sun sink into the sand, and sleep under a sky thick with stars. Folk musicians and dancers keep the old desert traditions alive around the campfire, and the silence between songs is something you carry home.

Wildlife and Nature

Rajasthan is not only sand and stone. Ranthambore National Park, once a royal hunting ground, is among the best places in India to see a wild tiger, often against the backdrop of ruined pavilions. Keoladeo in Bharatpur is a paradise for birdwatchers, drawing thousands of migratory birds each winter.

Crafts, Food and Festivals

The bazaars of Rajasthan overflow with block-printed textiles, blue pottery, silver jewellery and mirror-work. The food is rich and hearty, from dal baati churma to fiery laal maas. Festivals are frequent and joyous, whether the camel fair at Pushkar, the desert festival of Jaisalmer, or the elephant and kite celebrations of Jaipur.

When To Visit

The best time to travel is October to March, when the desert days are warm and the nights cool. Summers are intensely hot, while the short monsoon brings a brief green softness to the arid land.
