The Rann of Kutch

Gujarat’s most unforgettable sight is the Great Rann of Kutch, a seemingly endless plain of white salt that stretches to the horizon. Under a full moon it glows silver, and during the winter Rann Utsav festival a tented city rises from the desert with music, craft and colour. The surrounding villages are among the finest places in India for handmade textiles and embroidery.

Lions and Wildlife

The Gir Forest is the only place in the world where Asiatic lions still roam wild. A safari here, through dry teak forest and open scrub, offers the rare chance to see these cats in their last natural home. Gujarat also shelters wild asses in the Little Rann and vast flocks of flamingos along its coast.

Heritage and Cities

Ahmedabad, India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City, rewards slow exploration of its old walled quarters, carved wooden houses and intricate step-wells. The temples of Somnath and Dwarka draw pilgrims to the coast, while the stepwell of Rani ki Vav at Patan is a masterpiece of carved stone.

Crafts and Culture

Few states can match Gujarat for handicraft. Its villages produce bandhani tie-dye, mirror-work, patola weaving, block prints and beadwork, much of it still made by hand. Folk dances such as the garba and dandiya come alive during Navratri, the state’s most joyous festival.

Food

Gujarati cuisine is largely vegetarian and quietly brilliant, balancing sweet, salt and spice. A traditional thali brings a rotating feast of dals, vegetables, breads and snacks such as dhokla, thepla and undhiyu, always generous and always fresh.

When To Visit

October to March offers the most pleasant weather and coincides with the Rann Utsav and Navratri seasons. Summers are hot and dry, while the monsoon greens the countryside for a short spell.
