Kerala

Backwaters, beaches and green hills

Discover Kerala

Kerala unspools along India’s southwest coast like a long green ribbon, a place travellers often call God’s Own Country. Palm-lined backwaters, mist-covered tea hills, quiet beaches and a gentle, easy rhythm set it apart from the rest of India. This is a land to slow down in, to drift through by boat and to taste one dish at a time.

The Backwaters

Kerala’s backwaters are its signature, a network of calm lagoons, rivers and canals fringed by coconut palms and rice fields. The classic way to see them is aboard a kettuvallam, a converted rice barge, drifting past village life near Alleppey and Kumarakom. Nights on the water, with only birdsong and the ripple of the boat, are among the most peaceful you will find anywhere.

Hills and Tea

Inland the land rises into the Western Ghats, and the air turns cool and fragrant. Munnar is wrapped in emerald tea gardens that roll over the hills like a green sea, while Thekkady and the Periyar reserve offer spice plantations and boat trips in search of elephants. Wayanad, further north, adds waterfalls, caves and quiet forest trails.

Beaches and Coast

Kerala’s coast is long and lovely. Varkala sits dramatically atop red cliffs above the Arabian Sea, Kovalam curves in golden crescents, and Marari offers little more than sand, palms and calm. These are beaches for unwinding rather than crowds.

Culture and Kochi

The historic port of Kochi is a layered meeting of cultures, with Chinese fishing nets, a Jewish quarter, Portuguese churches and Dutch houses. Kerala’s arts are just as rich, from the elaborate make-up and drama of Kathakali to the martial art of Kalaripayattu and the thunderous snake-boat races of the monsoon.

Ayurveda and Food

Kerala is the home of Ayurveda, and its wellness retreats draw visitors seeking treatments and rest. The food is coastal and coconut-rich, from appam and stew to fresh seafood cooked in banana leaf, served on a sadya feast that fills a whole plantain leaf.

When To Visit

September to March brings the most comfortable weather and clear backwater cruising. The monsoon, from June, turns the state a deep green and is considered the best season for authentic Ayurvedic treatment.

At Bummel Tours India we design Kerala journeys around your mood, whether backwater cruising, hill-station calm, quiet beaches or wellness. Tell us what you are looking for, and we will shape the trip.
