For trekkers, routes like Roopkund and Har Ki Dun lead into some of the most beautiful high country in India.

In the lowland forests lies Jim Corbett, India’s oldest national park and the birthplace of Project Tiger. Its grasslands and sal forests shelter tigers, elephants and hundreds of bird species, and a safari here is a fine counterpoint to the high mountains.

Mountain life here is simple and warm. Local Garhwali and Kumaoni kitchens serve hearty fare such as aloo ke gutke, bhatt ki churkani and mandua roti, food built for cold evenings. Small stone temples and painted village homes reward slow wandering.

March to June brings clear mountain weather and open high-altitude routes, while September to November offers crisp air and golden light. Winter blankets the upper valleys in snow, and the monsoon, though green, can bring landslides on hill roads.
